Recruiting guide
Recruiting a vascular surgeon.
Vascular surgeons operate on aneurysms and blocked arteries and do much of their work through catheters, which puts them alongside interventional cardiologists and radiologists. Hospitals recruit them for limb salvage, stroke prevention and call; office-based labs recruit them for outpatient procedures.

What does a vascular surgeon earn?
No federal pay series for vascular surgery.
The BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey publishes no occupation for vascular surgery. BLS’s list of job titles places the vascular Surgeon in Surgeons, All Other (SOC 29-1249). That group’s figures cover every specialty counted in it, so this guide does not print them as the pay of a vascular surgeon; the Surgeons, All Other salary page has them by state.
Sources: BLS: SOC 2018 direct match title file, read October 25, 2026; 2018 Standard Occupational Classification: major groups and occupation definitions, U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Vascular surgeons are among the specialties BLS's title list assigns to Surgeons, All Other, the group named above, so no vascular series exists. That group's average is too broad to price a vascular offer.
Hospital offers pay a salary or production with call stipends, while practices with office-based labs pay on production and share lab income with partners. Candidates ask about the split between open and endovascular work and who owns the lab.
Where do vascular surgeons look for jobs?
- Where new hires come from
- New hires come from residency or after a fellowship
- Who employs them
- Hospital-employed vascular groups, private vascular practices with office-based labs, academic medical centers and multispecialty heart and vascular institutes.
- Who you compete with for candidates
- Office-based lab companies offering outpatient procedure work, academic centers with complex aortic programs, and hospitals with established heart and vascular institutes.
Vascular surgeons come from integrated residencies or from fellowships after general surgery. Each class is small, and faculty know which graduates want hospital practice and which want outpatient lab work.
Experienced vascular surgeons move for call relief, a better hybrid operating room, or ownership in a lab. A posting that describes the imaging suite, the vascular lab and the call schedule gives them what they need to compare.

What does an open vascular surgery position cost?
The worked example
The recruitment cost calculator’s own example with vascular surgery chosen: a position open 120 days, a locum covering 60 of them at 40 hours a week, one posting on each of CareerMD, DocCafe, NEJM CareerCenter and PracticeMatch for the whole time, and a contingency agency as well.
- Revenue the empty schedule does not bring in
- No published figure: needs yours
- Locum cover, physician pay only
- $85,714 to $102,857 (estimate from Locumstory (CHG Healthcare), 2025)
- Agency fee
- Needs your first-year pay
- Job board spend
- $4,296, plus a quote
- Total, boards and agency
- $90,010 to $107,153 (estimate from Locumstory (CHG Healthcare), 2025; MedStaff Nationwide, 2026)
The total leaves out the revenue the empty schedule does not bring in, one board priced by quote and the agency fee: the calculator has no published figure there for vascular surgery, so it asks for yours.
Figures from the recruitment cost calculator, with each published figure’s publisher and year beside it; the days, the locum cover and the boards are the calculator’s example choices, not a recommendation.
What the calculator has for vascular surgery
- Revenue one physician brings in: no published figure, so you supply the annual revenue one physician in the specialty brings your organization
- Locum pay: $250 to $300 an hour (estimate, Locumstory (CHG Healthcare), 2025)
- First-year pay: no published figure, so you supply the first-year pay you expect to offer
- Contingency agency fee: 20 to 30% of first-year pay (estimate, MedStaff Nationwide, 2026)
The calculator publishes no revenue figure for vascular surgery, so enter your own: the hospital admissions, imaging and procedures the surgeon would bring. Patients with critical limb ischemia or aneurysms cannot wait long, so a vacancy usually means transfers.
Locum vascular surgeons are paid $250 to $300 (estimate, Locumstory (CHG Healthcare), 2025) an hour, and hospitals use them to keep call covered. Wound care and dialysis access referrals drift to other surgeons while the seat is empty.
Which recruiting channels work for vascular surgery?
Describe the procedures and the equipment. Vascular candidates choose between jobs based on how much open and endovascular work they will do and where they will do it.

The channels that fit, compared
| Channel | What it costs | What to decide |
|---|---|---|
| Residency and fellowship outreach | Surgeon time with programs; no fee | Which programs train surgeons with the open and endovascular mix you need. |
| Locum cover | $250 to $300 an hour paid to the physician (estimate, Locumstory (CHG Healthcare), 2025), plus the agency's margin | Whether locum call protects the remaining surgeons during the search. |
| Contingency search firm | 20 to 30% of first-year pay (estimate, MedStaff Nationwide, 2026) | Whether a smaller market needs a firm to reach candidates. |
| Physician job boards | PracticeMatch: $299 per 30-day posting | Whether a posting adds candidates beyond program networks. |
Questions to ask
- What share of the work is open surgery versus endovascular?
- Is there a hybrid operating room and an accredited vascular lab?
- Does the practice own or partner in an office-based lab?
- How is call shared, and is it paid?
Which rules bite vascular surgery recruiting?
Office-based labs and hospital stipends both sit close to the federal referral laws, and vascular surgeons work with device makers on stents and grafts.
Every federal rule this site cites, grouped by what a practice or recruiter is doing, is on the federal rules page. For the contract itself (pay models, tail coverage, restrictive covenants), read the physician employment contract, clause by clause. These notes describe the rules and cite them; they are not legal advice for a particular offer or contract.
Questions recruiters ask about vascular surgeons.
How long does it take to recruit a vascular surgeon?
Graduates sign about a year before they finish, and experienced surgeons often take a year or more to move, so start early and keep locum call arranged.
What does a vascular surgery recruiter charge?
Expect 20 to 30% (estimate, MedStaff Nationwide, 2026) of first-year pay from a contingency firm, going by the calculator's range, due when the surgeon is hired.
Where do vascular surgeons look for jobs?
Through residency and fellowship faculty, colleagues, and the general physician boards in the job board directory.
