Rules

What the rules allow, state by state.

Physician advertising answers to two sets of rules: the medical board of the state where the physician is licensed, and a handful of federal agencies. This page indexes every state board; the federal rules have a page of their own.

The state medical boards.

Each state sets its own rules for how physicians may advertise, usually in the medical practice act and the board’s regulations, and its medical board enforces them. The federal rules on patient privacy, testimonials, texts and referrals apply in every state on top of that; they are on the federal rules page.

This index is the first step toward a rules page for every state. It holds each board’s own website, its license lookup, whether osteopathic physicians answer to the same board, and, for 22 of the 51, the advertising provision we read on the state’s own legislative or rules site. Where a row says the rule is not yet recorded, we have not read it yet; it does not mean the state has none. The descriptions here are not legal advice.

Board names follow the Federation of State Medical Boards directory, read October 25, 2026; websites and license lookups were read on each board’s own site the same day. “Same board” means the directory lists no separate osteopathic board for the state; 13 states license osteopathic physicians separately. An advertising rule is listed only where we read the statute or regulation on the state’s own site, and it is usually one provision among several that reach advertising.

Rules that apply in every state.
