Recruiting guide
Recruiting an endocrinologist.
Diabetes, thyroid disease and obesity keep endocrinology clinics booked months out, and the specialty is mostly outpatient work with little call. That makes endocrinologists attractive to telehealth companies as well as to health systems, and employers recruit against both.

What does an endocrinologist earn?
No federal pay series for endocrinology.
The BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey publishes no occupation for endocrinology. BLS’s list of job titles does not name the specialty, and Physicians, All Other (SOC 29-1229) is its group for “all physicians not listed separately”. That group’s figures cover every specialty counted in it, so this guide does not print them as the pay of an endocrinologist; the Physicians, All Other salary page has them by state.

The federal pay survey has no figure for endocrinologists specifically, for the reason given in the panel above. Any number quoted to you comes from a private survey, and its sample and definitions matter.
Endocrinology is a cognitive, clinic-based specialty, so offers rest on visit volume and work units more than procedures. Thyroid ultrasound and biopsy, continuous glucose monitor interpretation and diabetes education programs add income that candidates ask about.
Where do endocrinologists look for jobs?
- Where new hires come from
- Most new hires finish a fellowship after residency
- Who employs them
- Health system specialty groups, academic medical centers, multispecialty clinics, independent endocrine practices and telehealth companies focused on diabetes and weight.
- Who you compete with for candidates
- Telehealth obesity and diabetes companies offering remote schedules, and academic centers offering focused clinics such as thyroid cancer or pituitary disease.
Endocrinology fellows train after internal medicine or pediatrics residency, and many choose a job by schedule and setting. Fully remote and part-remote positions have changed what they expect from an employer.
Health systems that need endocrinologists in community clinics compete by offering support: diabetes educators, nurse practitioners and pharmacists who take on follow-up visits so the physician sees the complex cases.

What does an open endocrinology position cost?
The worked example
The recruitment cost calculator’s own example with endocrinology chosen: a position open 120 days, a locum covering 60 of them at 40 hours a week, one posting on each of CareerMD, DocCafe, NEJM CareerCenter and PracticeMatch for the whole time, and a contingency agency as well.
- Revenue the empty schedule does not bring in
- No published figure: needs yours
- Locum cover, physician pay only
- $65,143 to $78,857 (estimate from Locumstory (CHG Healthcare), 2025)
- Agency fee
- Needs your first-year pay
- Job board spend
- $4,296, plus a quote
- Total, boards and agency
- $69,439 to $83,153 (estimate from Locumstory (CHG Healthcare), 2025; MedStaff Nationwide, 2026)
The total leaves out the revenue the empty schedule does not bring in, one board priced by quote and the agency fee: the calculator has no published figure there for endocrinology, so it asks for yours.
Figures from the recruitment cost calculator, with each published figure’s publisher and year beside it; the days, the locum cover and the boards are the calculator’s example choices, not a recommendation.
What the calculator has for endocrinology
- Revenue one physician brings in: no published figure, so you supply the annual revenue one physician in the specialty brings your organization
- Locum pay: $190 to $230 an hour (estimate, Locumstory (CHG Healthcare), 2025)
- First-year pay: no published figure, so you supply the first-year pay you expect to offer
- Contingency agency fee: 20 to 30% of first-year pay (estimate, MedStaff Nationwide, 2026)
No revenue figure for endocrinology is published in the calculator, so enter your own collections per endocrinologist. The bigger cost often lands elsewhere: primary care physicians managing complex diabetes without specialist help, and patients who seek care at a competitor or online.
Locum endocrinologists are paid $190 to $230 (estimate, Locumstory (CHG Healthcare), 2025) an hour, though few are available for clinic work. Some health systems lean on electronic consults from primary care in the meantime, which answers simple questions but does not shorten the list of patients who need a visit.
Which recruiting channels work for endocrinology?
Offer what telehealth offers where you can: some remote visits, predictable hours, and a team that handles routine follow-up. Then add what telehealth cannot, such as procedures and complex inpatient consults for those who want them.

The channels that fit, compared
| Channel | What it costs | What to decide |
|---|---|---|
| Fellowship program outreach | Physician time with fellows and program faculty; no fee | Whether you can offer the clinic mix fellows want, such as a thyroid or diabetes technology focus. |
| Physician job boards | NEJM CareerCenter: $775 per 30-day posting | Whether to state remote visit options and support staff in the posting. |
| Locum cover | $190 to $230 an hour paid to the physician (estimate, Locumstory (CHG Healthcare), 2025), plus the agency's margin | Whether a locum can work through the waiting list while you recruit. |
| Contingency search firm | 20 to 30% of first-year pay (estimate, MedStaff Nationwide, 2026) | Whether a community clinic far from training programs needs a firm. |
Questions to ask
- How long is the wait for a new endocrinology patient today?
- Which follow-up visits could educators or nurse practitioners take?
- Can part of the schedule be telehealth, and is that in writing?
- What first-year pay will you offer, given no federal pay series exists?
Which rules bite endocrinology recruiting?
Endocrinologists order laboratory tests constantly and increasingly prescribe weight loss drugs, so the referral laws and the FDA's warnings both reach endocrinology offers.
Every federal rule this site cites, grouped by what a practice or recruiter is doing, is on the federal rules page. For the contract itself (pay models, tail coverage, restrictive covenants), read the physician employment contract, clause by clause. These notes describe the rules and cite them; they are not legal advice for a particular offer or contract.
Questions recruiters ask about endocrinologists.
How long does it take to recruit an endocrinologist?
Several months at least, and longer for community clinics. Fellows decide in their final year, so a search aimed at them should start the year before they finish.
What does an endocrinology recruiter charge?
Contingency firms work for a percentage of first-year pay, 20 to 30% (estimate, MedStaff Nationwide, 2026) of first-year pay in the calculator's range, so the fee depends on the pay you set.
Where do endocrinologists look for jobs?
Through fellowship programs, through telehealth companies that recruit them directly, and on the general boards in the job board directory.
